Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Draw a snowflake with glue
Print one of our free snowflake templates. We have over 30 templates available!

Place a piece of wax paper on top of the template and tape it in place with painter’s tape.
Use glue to trace the outline of the snowflake.
Step 3: Cover with glitter and allow to dry
Sprinkle glitter generously onto the glue, covering it completely.
Remove the tape and lift the wax paper up, tipping it to remove the excess glitter.
Allow the glue to dry overnight.
Step 4: Add an ornament hanger
Very carefully, peel the snowflake off the wax paper. Start by lifting up each point and then work your way to the middle.
Thread a needle with white sewing thread or 1 strand of embroidery floss.
Poke the needle through one point of the snowflake.
Pull one side of the thread through, remove the needle, and tie a knot in the end of the thread, creating a hanger.
Your glitter snowflake is complete!
Now have fun making all kinds of colourful and sparkly snowflake ornaments using different snowflake patterns!
Helpful Tips:
- If your snowflakes curl up you can place them between 2 sheets of parchment paper and add some heavy books on top. Leave them for a few hours and they’ll be nice and flat again!
- You can also design your own snowflake shape! Start from the center and draw a snowflake with 6 points. You can either free hand it with the glue, or draw your snowflake on paper first.
Where can I find templates to make a glitter snowflake ornament?
There are 12 different snowflake templates for you to choose from, with 36 printable pages available! We used the small snowflakes to make our ornaments.
The snowflakes made from the line snowflake templates look prettier, in our opinion, but they’re also quite delicate. This makes them harder to remove from the wax paper. Allow them to dry really well, as they can rip if the glue isn’t completely dry.
The thicker fill-in snowflakes still look great, and they’re a lot easier for kids to add glue to and to peel off the paper.
What type of glitter is best for making this glitter snowflakes craft?
Fine glitter covers the glue more easily, but medium glitter sparkles more in the light, so it’s really up to you which type of glitter to choose. Chunky or shaped glitter isn’t recommended, unless you use fine glitter to fill in the gaps.
We recommend using wintery colours and shades like blue, pink, purple, silver, and iridescent white. But you can also have fun and make a whole rainbow of snowflakes!
How else can I make glitter snowflakes?
We also tested using parchment paper, instead of wax paper, and it worked well enough. The paper does get a bit wrinkly because of the moisture, though, so you may want to tape down the edges of the paper again as the glue dries.
Transparency film (like for an overhead projector) also works really well. The glue takes a bit longer to dry than it does on the wax paper, but the snowflakes stay a bit more 3D (raised up), rather than flattening completely.
And finally, if you don’t want to make an ornament, you can trace the templates onto a piece of cardstock or watercolour paper. Hold the paper and template against a window to do this, or use a light board. Then you can add glue and glitter to the paper for a fun art project!
The possibilities for your glitter snowflakes are endless! Hang them as ornaments, string them into a garland, or use them to decorate windows, walls, or gifts for a sparkly winter touch.
This simple craft is a fun and creative way to celebrate the beauty of snowflakes, no matter the season. Whether you’re adding them to your home decor or giving them as handmade gifts, these glittery creations are sure to bring a little extra shine to your day. Happy crafting!
